Swimming Safety Tips #3

July 16, 2009

It’s time for our third segment of our Summer Safety Tips!  This summer, we’ve covered how to make play time in the water and at pool parties a safer environment. Click here for all the swimming safety tips.  We have also reviewed measures you can take to reduce the ability of a child to wander into a pool area unsupervised or without your knowledge.

Today we would like to cover a plan of action you can take if a child does fall into a pool.  This plan of action is provided by the American Red Cross.

  1. Yell for help and check the scene to make sure that you can safely help the child.
  2. Get the child out of the pool and onto the pool deck.
  3. Check for consciousness by tapping and shouting – “Are you OK?”
  4. If someone is with you, have them call 9-1-1.
  5. Determine if the child is breathing by tilting the head back.  If you don’t hear or feel breathing or see the chest rising, give 2 Rescue Breathing or CPR immediately and continue until emergency help arrives.
  6. If you are alone and the child is not breathing and/or does not have a pulse, start Rescue Breathing or CPR immediately.  After one minute call 9-1-1. Return to the child and continue CPR until help arrives.

Water Safety is important to us at Waterworks and we hope that you have found our series of Summer Safety Tips helpful!

Swim Competition July 11th-Gold Dollar Coin Toss, Ribbons and Trophies

July 8, 2009

Swim Meet 5.16 037Waterworks will be holding a swim competition THIS Saturday July 11th starting at 11am and ending at approximately 1pm.   As a last minute addition our Coin Toss at the end of the meet will include Gold Dollar Coins!  We encourage all children who can swim the length of the pool to participate.  Every child receives a ribbon so everyone leaves a winner!  In addition to Participant and Placement ribbons Rainbow Time Improvement ribbons are given to children whose time have improved from the previous meet.   We also give trophies to children once they have earned 15, 30, 50, 75, 125, and 200 ribbons.  Competitions are a great way to motivate children to work harder in their classes.  They love collecting the ribbons, and the times recorded allow the parents to keep track of their progress.    Competitions also give the children a chance to perform in front of their friends and family while breaking up the monotony of weekly swim classes.  We will be barbequing hot dogs for sale along with snow-cones, Dippin’ Dots and other snacks to make the event fun for the whole family.  At the end of the meet all swim meet participants get to jump in the pool for our Coin Toss and take home whatever coins they gather.  We want to thank Angus Smith Construction for donating the Gold Dollar Coins for this meet and giving the children something extra special to look forward to.  If you would like to sign up for the competition please stop by our front desk to enroll!

Summer Swim Camp 003Our first week of Summer Swim Camp started out with a bang! Our swimmers worked hard on improving their technique of all four swim strokes, dives, flip turns, breathing, speed, and conditioning.  There was a friendly competition between the kids when they raced against each other. And all of the children looked forward to playing on our giant pool rafts at the end of each session.  Matt, our head-Swim Camp Instructor, along with our other Waterworks swim instructors made the days fun while the swimmers were working hard!  Parents have told us how much their kids have improved in just a of the week of swim camp!  On the last day of camp instead of the usual snack each child got a snow cone which was an exciting end to the weeklong camp.  We will be holding camp sessions every week this summer ending the week of August 31st-September 4th.   This camp is great for children between the ages of 5-14 years who can swim a minimum of 2 lengths of a 25 yard pool.  All children who participant must pass a swim test.  For more information please feel free to speak with one of our Customer Service Representatives or pick up a flyer at our front desk.Summer Swim Camp 006
